OPA (Obsessive Possessive Aggression)

OPA (Obsessive Possessive Aggression) is a collaboration established in 2001 by visual artists Slobodanka Stevceska and Denis Saraginovski. Its work is context-based and often involves parody, created reality, mockumentaries, tactical media, over-identification and subversive affirmation strategies.

In its earlier phase OPA’s focus was the art system, the art institutions and art as an institution. Thus OPA’s works were often fused with its members’ personal lives and their body of work consists of created situations, durational performances, nomadic practices, mockumentaries, etc.

With the rise of nationalism and xenophobia (both locally and internationally), OPA’s work has become much more political, developing works that reflect the current political situation and/or applying the strategies of over-identification, the subversive affirmation and so on.

In the period of 2012 to 2015, OPA participated in the establishing and intensive work of the Kooperacija Initiative, an art collective whose work was openly critical and an alternative to the controlled and decaying cultural institutions in the Republic of Macedonia.

In the course of its work OPA developed several entities, each of them applying different types of artistic strategies. While some of them are ironical and/or pseudo (OPA Professional, etc.), the latest one (OPA Foundation) moves towards the methods that foster practical utilitarian solutions and constructive art practices.
