Hundreds of books compose together a monument whose singular elements are individual sculptural works; a monument, which constantly alters its shape, mass, weight, meaning or content; a monument that relates to collective memory and the disregarded role of the book. A monument whose new meaning will be discovered once again in the recurrent distribution/ dissemination of the exact number of segments from which it is constituted, among the number of citizens to which it truly belongs.

Continue reading

Politics and art have many crossing points. Politics is determined by a defined course of action adopted for the purpose of efficiently achieving specific goals. In the broadest sense, they are synonymous, especially considering the communication aspect of art. Opinions on what makes art political vary from those maintaining that art in general is always engaged, to those who argue that it consists of explicit messages scribbled on the walls of a “conflict zone”. What is evident though, is that corresponding to contemporary occurrences, artists are able in asserting certain political views through their art, just as they are capable to act within any other social structure. However, when confronted with the artwork, the question of how to approach it remains: is it a subjective, personal point of the author, or do we perceive it according to the effect that it renders upon us?

Breaking: those responsible for the censorship

According to latest reports (Vest, #3593, 16/17 June, 2012), the City of Skopje rejects any responsibility linked with the vandal act of destruction of the artwork of OPA, which was part of Ars Acta’s project within the Skopje Kreativa Festival. According to the mayor, responsibility should be requested from the festival’s manager, Mr. Miodrag Kostik.

KOOPERACIJA pledges to follow the development of the process inquiring official statements by those responsible for such destruction of public artwork and intellectual property.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

Following the recent brutal act of censorship upon the artwork of OPA, which was part of the Skopje Kreativa Festival and organized by the City of Skopje, KOOPERACIJA publicly condemns the incompetence of the organizers who allowed the reactions of certain citizens and the Macedonian Orthodox Church to affect the decision to destroy this work deliberately, even though it was the property of the City and thus, the people of Macedonia.

Not only does this violent act directly disregard all basic standards and principles for the protection of Human Rights for freedom of expression and free speech, but presents an attack upon the core values of the country’s democracy.

The artists who revolve within KOOPERACIJA are completely disgusted by this unprincipled stance of the City of Skopje and express their utmost regret and disappointment of the fact that this institution has failed to show capability in protecting these valuable civil rights.

Visual Consumer Society by Senka Anastasova, PhD (excerpt from the ‘Philosophy of the Popular’, upcoming, CCCR, 2012)

Between consumption on visual culture and production of ‘desires’

The contemporary theory of visual society shows that visual images (digital and analog forms) are not completely ‘free’ and play a primary role in trade within modern societies. Today, it seems that art is expected to have (thick) financial value to supply the art market. By this logic, visual discourses have a primary role in the functioning of commercial strategies of the ads. Images take a central role in visual commodity society (culture) and its artistic ‘value’ depends on the constant production of goods, on behalf of their ‘function’.
